Greetings from Austin

Greetings from Austin

Well, here I am in sunny, HOT, Austin, Texas for the NAMAC conference. I attended the Youth Media Educators' Forum today, and one of the first people I met there was a fellow AmeriCorps volunteer serving at St. Paul Neighborhood Network. In talking about challenges and insights, we both hit upon the same topic: distribution -- how important yet difficult it is to find the right venue for youth media-sharing. One teen filmmaker said she feels inspired when she watches media produced by other youth in her own program, but she doesn't search YouTube or Google for work by other high schoolers from across the nation. Seems that live screenings might be better for distribution than an online portal.

All in all, it was interesting to hear from and connect with others in the field who are doing really cool projects with youth. I came away with some potentially great resources that I will explore in an update to this post. In the meantime, check back in 24 hours to find out about the exciting sessions I'll be attending tomorrow!
