Web 2.0 tools for youth media-makers

As we CEA folks gear up to kick off Youth View Cambridge, the brand new newscast produced by students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin HS, here are some electronic tools we've started to use and will continue to use more consistently as the program develops:

-Gmail Account (yvcambridge@gmail.com)
Besides allowing us to keep in touch with students outside of after-school meetings, a great benefit of this account is the Google calendar, which allows us to document meetings and student shoots. Students with their own gmail accounts/Google calendars can in turn share their schedules with us.

-Youth View Cambridge Blog
Each student news producer can be invited to set up a Google account and blog on this site about what they're working on. We will see how useful it turns out to be as the year progresses.

-Facebook Group
One of the students started the Facebook group. Although access to social networking sites is blocked at CRLS, the group quickly gained new members because students are constantly using the site outside of school. We are exploring the idea of posting video here, but it would probably require having everyone featured on the show sign release forms.

-NYMAP - Youth Video Exchange Network
This site is the product of a collaboration between access centers throughout the country, and we hope to use it as it develops as another outlet with which to share the youth newscasts.
