I am in a huge amphitheatre at the Beyond Broadcast Conference, designed by Frank Gehry, inhabited at the moment by Harvard and MIT media scholars. MTV and Yahoo Internet people are on a panel with Arin Crumely of the “Four Eyed Monsters” talking about participatory culture. There are attendees in Second Life, a virtual world and there are few dozen (I imagine) people sitting somewhere in the world watching the proceedings on the live web stream.

Arin Crumley, however, is in Los Angeles sitting in front of his computer’s camera. We’ve got his face sitting on a laptop next to the MTV guy, talking to us about his Internet filmmaking journey. He is a floating head on a laptop with a microphone pushed up to the laptop speaker with a ten-second lag. He is here, but not here.
