October 15, 2010 - 1:09pm (285) Fa Yeung Nin Wa (In the mood for love) [Hong Kong, Chinese, color, 2000, 98'] Written and directed by Wong Kar Wai [Happy Together 1997, 2046 2004] tells a beautifully nuanced pas de deux between Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung. As love-crossed, most-humble neighbors, the stars are aligned, but only for so far. Wong Kar Wai is carving a niche - if it's not already a chasm rich - for himself as a sumptuous, stylized, atmospheric storyteller. A consummate dance with no regrets, 2 lives passing in the Far Eastern night. "The director never uses scripts" - is that what I read on IMDB.com? Well, good for him. That's why we do not see their respective spouses, who themselves are suspected of having their own pas de deux, + so what is good for the goose is good for the gander as my eternal mother says. But our couple take it slooooowly, as if it makes them culpable to call themselves human. Nevertheless, the story is fetching + tender and at 90', the atmosphere does not overwhelm the senses. Kudos to the cinematography - Christopher Doyle, Pung-Leung Kwan, Pin Bing Lee: always shooting through something, always framed, always delectable. The close-up of objects, but never people,... read more
October 14, 2010 - 3:20pm (284) Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes without a face) France, French, bw, 1960, 88' Directed by Georges Franju [Le sang des bêtes 1949, Hotel des Invalides 1952] and working with 1st AD Claude Sautet [Classe Tous Risques 1960, Cesar et Rosalie 1972, Un coeur en hiver 1992, Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud 1995], the writing team of Pierre Boileau - Thomas Narcejac [Clouzot's Les diaboliques 1955, Hitchcock's Vertigo 1958], DP Eugen Schufftan [The Hustler 1961, The Schufftan Process], + composer Maurice Jarre [Lawrence of Arabia 1962, Doctor Zhivago 1965], is it any wonder the film hasn't stood the test of time? Pierre Brasseur is the mad doctor, Alida Valli his doggedly loyal assistant + procuress of nymphs, Edith Scob as the disfigured-face/McGuffin, … and I still couldn't quite get into it, even at less than 1.5 hours. Plein-air Paris scenes are invigorating, "cardboard" (?) chateau not so much. That the "good" doctor gets his comeuppance - by dogs (?), okay; that the more humanly daughter finds peace - better. I had heard so much about this film that maybe/perhaps/on second thought I held higher expectations. I wanted more. I got less. On the other hand Franju's short documentary Le sang... read more

July 25, 2008 - 3:23pm No emails from: Officer Frank Pasquarello (PIO, Public Information Officer for the Cambridge Police). So I called and left a message. ---------------------------------------------- No emails from: Deputy Chief James Burns (PIO for Cambridge Fire). So I called and found out that for on-air interviews I need to speak with John Gelinas, Chief of Operations. He was in. I called, but he did not pick up. I left a message. -------------------------------------------------- However, I did receive a voicemail from Lou DiBerardinis, MIT Environmental Health Office. He said that Cambridge Fire contacted him about my inquiry. And that he wanted to know what the project was all about, since they have not been contacted. His last sentence was: "so I can let the fire department know whether it was ok to talk to you guys". Let me get this straight: MIT is telling the Fire Department whether the Fire Department can talk to us? What's that all about? read more
July 24, 2008 - 2:43pm I have spoken with David O'Connor, Emergency Management Director for Cambridge. He needs to get an "ok" from the City Manager Bob Healy to do an on-air interview. But on the phone he seemed amenable to the idea. He will get back to me in 1-2 business days. Ini Tomeu, Public Information Officer, passed me along to Susan Feinberg who gave me police and fire public information officers' contacts: Officer Frank Pasquarello (police) and Deputy Chief James Burns. I have emailed both of them, and have yet to hear back. So possibly one interview with the city's pov. read more
