11/5/2007 Class Notes (somewhat incomplete)
These notes are somewhat incomplete, since I only wrote down what I personally wanted to remember. I did try to add in whatever else I could recall that would be useful. If people want to add to this to make it more useful for everyone, go ahead and post here and I'll re-edit and re-upload the attachment.
For future class sessions, I'll keep better records.

ANTZ: clips we might want to reference
These are scenes from the movie that we might want to reference. Usually they're of the movie's ants doing things that are, as Stefan would say, impossibly anthropomorphized (human behaviors, human catchphrases). Sometimes you do see short glimpses of female workers and female soldiers.
Times are (hour minute second), around when the scene begins.
0 01 45
Z (Woody Allen) says, "I was not cut out to be a worker."
0 03 20
Young ants are classified by other ants into worker and soldier groups.
0 04 30
Appearance of a female worker.
0 05 19
Female Worker says, "I love my work."
0 06 20
Z says, after making a mistake, "I dropped the ball."
0 06 28
Male General Mandible (Gene Hackman) appears, so we have an unrealistic male soldier.
0 08 08
News of termites attacking because they want foraging territory: seems kind of realistic.
0 09 09
Princess Bala (Sharon Stone) wants to have a conversation with General Mandible about getting married: totally human behavior.
0 10 00
Princess Bala asks her mother, the queen, "Mom, why am I marrying this guy?" Entire discussion about marriage and compatibility: totally human behavior.
0 11 00
Sylvester Stallone appears as Weaver, a male soldier.
0 11 10
Brief mention of and glimpse of "worker girls:" female worker ants.
0 13 30
Princess Bala and 2 female companions enter the bar.
0 14 41
One ant asks another, "How come I haven't seen you around here before?"
0 15 15
Dancing sequence: all ants dance in a choregraphed movement, Z and Bala dance in their own rhythm.
0 16 35 (already captured)
The ants (all of them are in the same colony) fight each other, not with mandibles but like they're fist-fighting.
0 17 10
Z asks Bala, "When can I see you again?" Human catchphrase.
0 17 25
Z sings while he works, using a pickaxe to dig. All the ants in the movie unrealistically use handheld tools.
0 18 06
An ant uses a broom-type object (very short glimpse).
0 18 34
Z wakes up Weaver (who is snoring) for discussion of a plan.
0 19 16
Z says, "If I can't see her again, my life isn't worth living."
0 20 44
Z marches in rank, trying to get Bala's attention.
0 21 47
General Mandible says, "A soldier knows that the life of an individual ant doesn't matter. What matters is the colony."
This seems almost correct, except for the gender.
0 23 13
First female soldier (very briefly seen, she has one throwaway line).
Somewhere around here there is a battle between ants and termites. An older soldier (Danny Glover) is decapitated, and Z talks to his head for a while before he dies. Realistic way for an ant to die in warfare.
0 26 30
Sylvester Stallone's Weaver character pretends to be a worker.
0 26 50
Weaver uses two pickaxes, talks to Azteca, a female worker.
0 28 28
Weaver asks Azteca out on a date.
0 33 22
Mandible introduces the queen and princess to Z.
0 34 10
Bala says to Z, "Haven't I seen you someplace before?" Then she says, "You're the guy from the bar."
0 35 20
Bala slaps Z.
0 36 00
Z tries to stop Bala from calling soldiers.
0 38 00
Bala and Z argue.
0 40 26
Queen and General Mandible talk.
0 41 27
Azteca talks about worker ants having choices.
0 44 00
Ant dialogue: "Thanks." and then, "Don't mention it."
0 45 54
Ants singing "Give Peace a Chance."
0 47 44
Assembled ants shout General Mandible's name.
0 53 44
Weaver is beaten up by General Mandible's staff.
0 55 10
General Mandible addresses his staff as "gentlemen."
0 56 43
Z creates a snow angel in powdered donut.
0 56 56
Antz ride a roller coaster that is really just a worm, crawling through holes in an apple.
0 59 20
Z asks Bala, "Let me ask you something: what made you come to the bar that night?"
1 00 08
Z tells Bala, "Just hold that thought, whatever you were thinking."
1 00 40
Colonel Cutter (male soldier) flies into a campfire area.
First really noticeable instance of a male ant flying.
1 01 28
Colonel Cutter says, "Princess, I got orders."
Bala replies, "Can't you think for yourself?"
1 02 14
Z paces back and forth and recites Woody Allen-type speech.
1 03 08
Bala says, "Take your hands off me."
1 04 07
Bala says to Mandible: "You're crazy."
1 04 50
Soldiers at the colony entrance stop Z from entering. Seems kind of realistic, except the soldiers are male.
1 06 10
Z tells Bala, "Yeah, I came back for you, I have strong feelings for you."
1 09 19
Z says about an ant, "That guy owes me money."
1 11 21
Some ant, panicking, says, "Every ant for himself!"
1 12 12 (already captured)
Z takes charge of the rescue of the colony.
1 12 55
Z hugs Bala.
1 16 18
Z is revived after mouth-to-mouth respiration, the rest of the ants clap their hands.
1 16 35
Weaver tells Z, "You da ant!" Weaver and Z slap hands.

6/23 progress
Sarah found a lot of warfare footage on archive.org and Amy Steptoe downloaded the files. Shaun and Amy Mertl also went to BU and got some footage of ants fighting. We can now pad out the warfare section.
Shaun and Amy also got some footage of ants crawling over a metal ant sculpture, and some general ant-walking-around footage that we could fit in somewhere.
Amy Mertl also digitized the first time-lapse sequence from the first BU B-roll trip.
All of this footage has been saved to the class hard drive and imported into the project file (but none of it has been used yet).
I added a couple of clips to my Future Applications/Close sequence and I may want to use portions of time-lapse to pad out Mario's dialogue.
We're also planning to use Rob's animated pictures as part of the final credit sequence. If anyone has suggestions about how they could be arranged in space, presented in time, etc. please submit them.
Amy Mertl, Shaun and I are watching "The Ant Bully," "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," and "ANTZ" for any clips that we could use.
I'll meet MCZ shoot people at CCTV tomorrow at 9 AM. And after that I think Shaun and I are going to the roof to get crowd footage.

Future Applications and Closing progress
Here is a transcript of what I've done. Remember, the wiki now requires a name and e-mail address for access, but you can just type in anything that looks valid.
http://projdoc.pbwiki.com/Technology+by+Jason
The Technology sequence was already assembled on a timeline by Sarah and Lorraine (and it also included the closing of the piece). I copied this sequence and called it "Technology by Jason," because I made some minor changes.
I didn't get as far as I wanted. I got all the interview clips, but the B-roll is only partially done and I didn't get to touch the music.
I know that Mario's section really needs B-roll, or else it's just him talking about brains and behavior.
I also think that Mario's brain images look kind of abstract, and we're going to have to add something to them to make them more understandable to the general audience. For instance, could we superimpose an outline of an ant head on some of his images to make it clear that this is a brain we're seeing? I'm going to look at his site and see if there's any way I can adapt them or add some type of explanation.
