Many people have fought to take Christian principles and ethics from politics. They argue that the Christian faith, principles or ethics should not apply to politics because there is separation of Church & State. I am not talking about corrupt politicians who use faith and Christian principles to deceive. Should Christian Principles and ethics be part of our politics?
Let us examine this issue carefully:
What is politic?
The dictionary word (adj. says it means sagacious, judicious, wise, refined, etc.
It also means: clever, cunning, wily. tricky, etc.
Who is a politician?
The politician is a public servant or civil servant, statesman elder, diplomat, senator, lawmaker, etc.
So the politician can choose to be sagacious, wise, judicious, prudent and refined, or he or she can choose to be cunning, wily, crooked or tricky. Knowing the deceitfulness of the human heart, many politicians choose to go the tricky, wily, crooked way, instead of the wise and sagacious way. The perception of the common man on the street is that politicians are corrupt and many despise them. It should not be so.
This is because the Christian principles and ethics have been carefully eroded out. When you talk about Christian principles and ethics in politics, the cry is loud and drowning: Oh, there is separation of State & Church! But can human beings live without truth, compassion and grace? Would life not be so miserable for everyone? Everyone is feeling the pang of deceitful political process that is devoid of truth and humility. The politician is a public servant called to serve in humility and kindness and not to enrich themselves.
As the disciples of Jesus were cajoling for position and power, Jesus said to them:
“But ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you, but whosoever will be great, let him be your minister. And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant. Even as the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and give his life a ransom for many.”
This is a Christian principle that expounds and lays the path to true leadership: It is a pathway to servant hood and humility, not greed, deceit and lies. What is wrong in reminding the politicians, corporations, institutions and the leaders who are not abiding by these principles of wisdom and sagacious way what the political process demands?
What is the result of this negligence and yelling about separation of Church & State?
• The banks are corrupt
• Wall Street caused the financial melt down
• Companies have money, but won’t hire any; and many Americans are struggling without jobs and can’t pay their rent.
• College has become a luxury for the few and college loans still a struggle for many
• The rich can’t pay the taxes they are entitled to pay, and if they should pay, that could offset the deficit and heal the financial crises America faces.
• The Elderly and children services are been cut.
• The poor are neglected; should you repeal the healthcare, their plight will be worse.
• Congress chosen by the people to serve are locked up in power struggle- who will rule and not rule. They can’t come together and do things for the people who elected them. They are many things Congress can do to change the situation in the country, but they won’t because political parties are struggling who will rule next. The political process has become money and power venture business- a great moral deviation of true leadership- a leader should stand, suffer and fight for the people.
• Instead of electing those who are wise and sagacious; it is now leaders who are rich and don’t possess leadership qualities; some could buy the political seat with so much money and we call it democracy, and they care less about the people.
These are the things that destroy nations and empires.
Should they be Christian principles and ethics in politics? Yes. It is that the lawmaker, politician, corporations and businesses be guided by Christian principles and the fear of God. It is that they remember they are there to serve the people and help them, not increase their burden. The Law maker or politician is not there to exalt him or herself, or cajole for power, but help the people to prosper and reach their goal and vision in life.
Jesus says to humanity: “I came that ye might have life and that life more abundantly.” John 10:10 Why deny the people who elected you the privilege to prosper? Political parties are irrelevant if they cease to do the people’s business. That is why they are sent to Congress. They are not sent there to enrich themselves They should come together in unity and love and help the people, instead of stalling laws that could help make life better for people that voted them in. They forget God alone exalts people; He is the one who changes times and seasons. It does not matter how much you pay to undo your opponent, if God does not assign the position of leadership to you, you can’t buy it. Leadership is for those who have been prepared for it, and for the glory of God and His purposes.
There is so much stealing of money, businesses are corrupt; the political process is corrupt; people just want to amass money for themselves and families; we deal with each other deceitfully in our homes because of money. Capitalism has crumbled us, is it? The Scripture reminds us that: The love for money is the root of all evil.” Money does not solve every problem.
So what is wrong in reminding the politicians or lawmakers Christian principles and ethics that can shape and change their lives so they can serve us better? Christian principles and ethics have been a great source of spiritual renewal, awakening and refreshing at a time like this in the history of the world. I say it again, I am not talking of politicians who use Scripture to deceive. Christian principles and ethics remind us of how to conduct ourselves in discipline, so we can enjoy peace and tranquility in our lives; and live in harmony with each other.
Please, let us come back to Christian principles and ethics and save our nation from collapse like other nations and empires. We have created our problems; we can also choose to change them. It is the choice we have to make as politicians, lawmakers, and the people; as we adhere to Christian principles and ethics in our lives. Can you separate Christian principles & Ethics in politics? No, you can’t. Can we ignore moral principles and Christian ethics in our lives and live any how we want?? No, we can’t succeed. That is why there is so much chaos and unrest in our world because our politicians, institutions, businesses, banks, lawmakers are devoid of moral and Christian principles and ethics. The Scriptures says: “Where the people have no vision, they perish.” The Scripture is that which gives us vision and leads and guides us to the path way to go- the path way of truth and conscience. Where there is no truth, we grope in darkness.
