Public Art Tour - Harvard Square - Map 5

Although I've spent a lot of time in Harvard Square over the years, I have to admit I've never noticed this granite sculpture entitled "Omphalos," which is right next to the newsstand and T station. I've often admired the mural on the wall of the Harvard Square Theater, "Women's Community Cancer Project Mural;" so doing this piece was an opportunity to learn more about it.

Within the T station, there is plenty of art to enjoy, including the 8-foot long "New England Decorative Art" mural, composed of ceramic tiles that show motifs that are typical to New England gravestone carving, wall stencils, quilts, weather vanes, bowsprints, silhouettes, and 18th century engravings of sailing vessels. And many of us have enjoyed the luminous stained glass mural entitled "Blue Sky on the Red Line" while waiting for the bus.

Thanks for sharing this map and these pieces of art, Siobhan. The Women's Community Cancer Project Mural is breathtaking. Did the Women's Community Cancer Project work on just the mural?

Actually, I just learned that there's a documentary about the mural created by the CCTV ZipDocs group: http://cctvcambridge.org/node/1790

Does anyone else out there know more about the WCCP? Or have a favorite public work of art in our fair city?

thks, Siobhan
