Hand Held is a newly released documentary produced and directed by two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Don Hahn. The film chronicles the work of Mike Carroll who was one of the first photographers to travel to Romania after the fall of the communist regime in 1989. During Carroll’s first visit, he encountered the horrific scenes of an epidemic of pediatric AIDS in orphanages in Romania. His heart wrenching photographs and stories were published in The Boston Globe and The New York Times and opened the eyes of the western world to the plight of Romanian children. What followed was a twenty-year odyssey for Mike and his colleagues as they fought to bring help to a population of children in need.

A resident of Pepperell, MA, Mike Carroll’s photographs have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Time, People, Newsweek, and Fortune, among other publications. His corporate clients include American Express, Disney, Compaq, General Motors, and many other companies.

Don Hahn’s storied career with Walt Disney Pictures, includes a Best Picture Oscar nomination for Beauty and the Beast – the first animated film in this category. Hahn was also nominated for a 2007 Best Animated Short for The Little Matchgirl.

Hahn was the Associate Producer on the landmark film Who Framed Roger Rabbit and is currently working with Tim Burton on the stop-motion animated feature Frankenweenie.
