This Saturday, October 25, 2008, at 1:00 PM the new community garden at Costa Lopez Taylor Park on Charles Street in East Cambridge will be dedicated by the City of Cambridge. This space, known by locals as the Painted Park, was a fenced off vacant lot until this June when the city began construction of the new garden. They finished up last week.
The garden has about 30 four by eight foot raised plots (at least one of which is built specifically for wheelchair accessibility), compost bins, water, checker tables, benches, sculpture, birdhouses, and a big tree. The plots will be administered by the Cambridge Conservation Commission. If you would like more information about reserving a plot here contact the commission. Here is a link. This piece of park would not be here if not for the diligent work of members of the East Cambridge Planning Team. They got the land donated to the city, and finally got the city to build the park. That is part of what your community group can do for you. It depends on you, though. If you and your neighbors are willing to put in some sustained effort, keep paying attention, and not give up, this, and more, could be the result.
