U.S. Senator Barack Obama won the Democratic presidential nomination today, 27th August 2008, making history as the first black candidate picked to lead a major American political party. This is a major milestone in American history.

With the roll call of the states standing at 1549.5 votes for Barack Obama and 341.5 for Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator Clinton joined the New York State delegation on the floor of the Democratic National Convention. Senator Clinton then moved to suspend the rules and nominate Senator Obama by acclamation.

With Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi taking over as chairwoman of the Democratic convention, the motion passed on a voice vote.

Obama's name was placed into nomination by acclamation at the national Democratic Party's convention in Denver. He faces Republican rival John McCain in the November 4 election to succeed President George W. Bush.
